A 3-Part Online Class on Reading & Working Cattle

COW SMART
TIPS & EXERCISES to LEARN HOW TO READ AND WORK A COW
3 Workshops - 21 Lessons - Exercises

Yes! I want to GET COW SMART!

Get more comfortable with cattle, now!

Howdy, Fellow Cow-Lovers!

The ability to read a cow and respond well - is a cross between intoxicating fun, skill, and art!

But an immense frustration in learning is the few opportunities to work live cattle.

Plus, it's commonly believed you can only learn to read and work cattle by working them live. However, that's not the entire story - although - it is true that you do need experience – of course.

But, there's so much you can learn - and exercises you can do - on your own - to get cow smart.

Let me help you discover exciting ways to grow knowledge about cattle and the exercises you can do to practice. Then, when you do work live cattle, you'll be more confident, have a plan, and be ready to go for it!

Let's do it!

"Barb, You make learning about cows exciting and interesting! The next time I work a cow, I will be much more knowledgeable and be able to look at cattle in a different way." ~ Sharon L

Improve Your Ability to Read a Cow.

Move with Confidence and Rhythm.

o   Respond instantly and stay in position to a darting, moving cow.

o   Be a good partner with your horse to help him stay correct as you move with a cow.

o   Understand position, rhythm, and timing to control a cow in a specific way (depending on the cow sport.)

o  Identify a cow and predict how it will act when separated from the herd.

o  Stay slow on the inside as you and your horse stay with a fast cow on the outside.

Video replays for each session are available now - and indefinitely - on the
COW SMART website - for a lifetime!

NEW EASY LEARNING FEATURE! The replays per Workshop are divided into 7-8 short videos - the individual lessons. The Q&A portion is also a separate video per Workshop.

UNDERSTAND
and RECOGNIZE

Take the mystique out of reading and working cattle by exploring:

  • What is the ultimate experience of 'working' a cow? What does the finished product feel like?
  • The nature of cattle and how that impacts arena work
  • Describing and identifying cattle in 'cow lingo' (-:

READ and DIRECT

Purposefully influence a cow’s behavior by exploring:

  • What part a cow's temperament plays in how controllable it is - and the signs to look for to predict it's behavior
  • How a cow’s direction and movement are influenced
  • How to practice the essential skills of ‘rating’ and ‘traveling’ with a cow
  • Defensive vs. offensive postures in different cow sports

FLOW and CONNECT

Understand how a horse and rider move efficiently and effectively together to influence a cow:

  • The stop/turn/draw mechanical sequence for the horse, the rider, and as a unit
  • The cow/core connection
  • Purpose driven self-talk
  • Common horse and rider mistakes and how to remedy them

"I learned so much. For those of us who are not around cows all the time learning how to identify one black cow from another is so helpful. It’s amazing much detail you pointed out that I would never have seen. I’ve always felt embarrassed when a trainer or herd helper told me which cow to go after and I had no idea what they were talking about. I appreciate your patience. You're always diplomatic in answering some tough questions."

~ K S

You'll Learn a Ton of Tips and Exercises

  • Be clear about your job as the rider for reading and working a cow
  • Understand the natural tendencies of cattle as a herd animal: on horseback, on foot, and in the arena
  • Realize the behavioral differences between heifers, steers, and bulls
  • Discover what is meant by “fresh” vs. “sour” cattle
  • Adopt a system for describing the physical and behavioral characteristics of cattle
  • Describe and identify cattle easily
  • Understand a cow’s ‘body language’
  • Predict a cow’s behavior when separated from the herd based on observable actions
  • Be able to understand and speak cow lingo with trainers and cowie friends!
  • Which skills can be developed with a flag - and which cannot
  • Make cattle watching fun
  • Understand how and why your horse moves most efficiently with a cow
  • Know how to guide, use your eyes, legs and feet to help a horse be accurate and timely when moving with a cow
  • Common mistakes of the rider, horse, or the team (for many of the topics) and their remedies

"The concepts in this program are so clear and well-articulated. I have much more confidence with cattle. I don't feel nearly as vulnerable and lacking knowledge as I used to!" ~Peggy M

"So much valuable, challenging, applicable information in this series. The breakdown you did in the "Rider connecting to the cow" when walking to the herd, entering the herd, assessing the flow, looking to the outside, getting the right angle on the flow/cow, stepping up, etc is genius. Can't wait to use that thought process in the pen." ~ Betty G
